Stromausgleich Österreich
Our innovative platform connects players with markets: Anyone who can actively control the electricity consumption or generation of systems or processes, or who has flexible electricity storage, can participate.
New flexibility for the electricity grid
Too much or too little electricity in the grid gets the system out of balance. What used to be the exception has become part of the daily business of all grid operators because electricity from renewables cannot usually be generated on demand. However, it is possible to flexibly control the feed-in of electricity and/or consumption in response to an external signal from the market (price or activation): Industrial processes, small wind farms, (private) photovoltaic systems, e-cars, heat pumps, water boilers – all these units can specifically increase or reduce their consumption and generation. They can offer ‘flexibility’ as a system service.
Stromausgleich Österreich wants to use this flexibility potential in the future to balance frequency fluctuations or local grid overloads and contribute to ensuring an efficient and secure grid operation at all times. For a secure energy transition.
The intelligent solution developed by APG connects players with grid operators and their markets. The aim is to make access to the electricity markets as easy as possible. The platform creates new economic opportunities, contributes to a resilient overall system, and enables everyone to participate in the energy system.
Joint energy transition project
Only by combining forces can we ensure a secure energy transition. Stromausgleich Österreich invites everyone to participate.

Digital Solutions
As grid operators, we balance the fluctuating renewable energies and electricity consumption by adding digital solutions to our infrastructure. This is how we make the electricity system more flexible. Feed-in of electricity from wind and solar power plants into the grid is facilitated even better. Together for a secure, renewable energy future.

A platform for all players
Anyone who can actively control their own electricity consumption or generation, or who has flexible electricity storage, can participate. Our innovative platform connects players with markets.

Economic potential
We unlock attractive economic potentials and facilitate the participation of all players in the energy system.

Easy market access for automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR)
To date, flexibility providers face the challenge of having to maintain separate access systems or interfaces, usually per market or product. The new platform will achieve a considerable improvement in the future: Stromausgleich Österreich is to become the central point of access for providing flexibilities at various electricity markets – according to the motto: ‘A single interface for all relevant markets and products’. All data required for operation (bids, activation signals, etc.) can be exchanged via the platform.
The first interface has been operational since September 2024: Since then, flexibility providers – also known as aggregators – have been able to participate in the aFRR energy market via Stromausgleich Österreich. In the future, APG plans to connect further markets so that flexibility providers only have to establish and maintain this one interface. – One implementation, many business cases.
Become part of Stromausgleich Österreich!
Are you a provider of flexibilities and interested in becoming part of Stromausgleich Österreich and the future of the electricity system?
Participation of aggregators:
As an aggregator, you bundle flexibilities from smaller plants and thus form a link between end customers and the electricity markets. After prequalifying for the secondary control energy market (aFRR), the platform Stromausgleich Österreich is now available to you.
If you are interested in participating or have any questions about the platform, please feel free to contact us. You will find the contact details at the bottom of the page.
Participation of all other providers of flexibilities:
Are you an industrial company with controllable processes, an OEM with numerous controllable units combined in a cloud, an energy community, or a private owner of a controllable device (e.g. electric car, battery storage, heat pump...)? APG is currently working on further solutions for all these groups. Until then, we would like to refer you to established aggregators in the market who have experience in connecting such processes and customer groups. This way, your flexibilities can already be used today!
Technical implementation
APG uses the software solution of EQUIGY for the technical implementation of Stromausgleich Österreich: the Crowd Balancing Platform (CBP) has been operating successfully in the Netherlands for some time now and enables large numbers of decentralized flexibilities to be connected to the market. For this purpose, APG has joined the European consortium EQUIGY.
The future of small-scale flexibilities
APG is currently working on developing Stromausgleich Österreich further to fully exploit the potential of small-scale flexibilities. A connection to additional balancing markets (Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) and manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR)) is being developed and the connection to further electricity markets and products is currently being evaluated.
