THE Interface for Flexibility in Austria — One Connection for All Markets
Austria’s energy system needs greater flexibility. As the share of variable renewable generation from solar and wind continues to grow, electricity production fluctuates more than ever before, placing increasing demands on grid stability. To keep the power system in balance every second of the day, flexible facilities capable of responding rapidly to these fluctuations are essential. Although several balancing reserve markets already exist to provide this flexibility, access has traditionally been fragmented, technically complex, and economically challenging—particularly for smaller market participants.
→Centralized online market access
One connection—all flexibility markets
From now on:
The new platform provides a single, centralized gateway to all flexibility markets.
Rather than connecting to multiple standalone systems, market participants can access all balancing reserve markets through a single web-based platform with a unified technical interface. This unified approach significantly reduces integration efforts while establishing consistent data formats, communication protocols, and reporting standards across all markets.
So far:
Under the previous system architecture, participants required a separate technical interface for each balancing reserve product. Each system had its own data formats, communication requirements, and technical specifications, resulting in multiple parallel interfaces, higher implementation and maintenance costs, and ongoing connection fees.
The ‘Stromausgleich Österreich’ platform removes these technical and economic barriers, making participation in Austria’s balancing reserve markets significantly easier while enabling smaller flexibility providers to access these markets efficiently for the first time.
